The following are the names and armory of all of the kingdoms, principalities, baronies, and provinces of the Known World. The territories are arranged first by their respective rank (kingdoms, then principalities, then provinces and baronies jointly), and then by the date of their first rulers’ coronation/investiture at their current level, or in the case of provinces, by the date that they were recognized at their current level by the Board of Directors. Where elevations occurred on the same day, precedence is assigned alphabetically. In addition, each kingdom and principality listing also includes the populace badges and ensigns for that territory, and each barony and province lists the kingdom (and principality, if any) to which they owe their fealty.
UPDATE 12/29/2023 – Branches which have transitioned to shire status have been removed from the Armorial, including the former Barony of Fontaine dans Sable, and the name “Principality of Insulae Draconis” has been updated.
UPDATE 9/30/2020 – Branches which have transitioned to shire status have been removed from the Armorial, including the former Province of Arrow’s Flight and the former Barony of White Waters. In addition, the Crown Principality of Tir Mara has been removed from this list. As of this writing, Tir Mara has not been formally recognized as a principality, and is without an established line of princes and princesses. Technically, they are a region that has been afforded the title of crown principality with the expectation that they will someday become a principality. Should that day come, Tir Mara’s place in the order of precedence will be set by the date of the investiture of their first Coronets.
An Apology
As a member of the SCA who grew up in the Shire of Wintermist (now a Barony), I am sensitive to the feelings of those in shires who feel that they receive less attention than their baronial or provincial cousins. For those who wonder why their territory is not represented here, allow me a moment to explain.
The initial goal of this project was to determine precedence order for use in seating royals and landed nobles on a dais for court. This goal emerged as a logical extension of a previous article, Arranging the Dais for Court. And while provinces do not have a ceremonial head that sits court (the Crown Province of Østgarðr excepted), Corpora states that they rank equally with baronies, and so the eight provinces were included in the list. But shires, per Corpora, rank below provinces and baronies, and so were out of scope for the original project.
One major struggle in this project was determining the dates by which precedence could be measured. Early records of the SCA are incredibly hard to come by, and many records are little more than a mention of a territorial name with a year, and maybe a month, of first activity. Compounding the difficulty were the often loose rules regarding status of territories. The establishment of a territory in the early days of the SCA could be achieved through little more than a meeting at someone’s house by five or more like-minded people. And if the territory was the first in a given state, it was automatically granted baronial status.
Fortunately, the College of Arms has long been the Society’s top record-keeper, for that data which falls under their purview. So while finding a date of establishment or recognition by the Board of Directors might be an exercise in futility, each kingdom’s College of Heralds will, with near certainty, have a specific date for each Coronation, and for each court in which each Baron, Baroness, Prince, or Princess was invested with their fief by the Crown.
The drawback to this approach is that the College of Arms did not consistently keep similar records for the establishment of shires. And while it may be possible to locate most of these dates, given access to the Board of Directors’ minutes archives (a research project I would love to take on someday), the sad truth is that some of this data is likely lost forever to the mists of time.
Also, the 220 device emblazons in the original project took me over a month to complete. Most kingdoms have more shires than baronies and provinces combined, which means that the number of images would at least double, if not triple, before the work was complete. This is not to mention all of the dependent subgroups within the SCA, such as cantons, ridings, colleges and strongholds, whose status fluctuates so frequently that their inclusion in such a project would ensure its near instantaneous obsolescence.
I will complete the emblazons of the shires of the SCA at some point. And, given enough resources, I might be able to add them into this armorial with well-researched and independently confirmed dates for order of precedence. However, until that day comes, I’m afraid that all territories below the rank of barony or province are by necessity excluded from this project.

The dates provided here have been exhaustively researched, and independently verified by their respective kingdoms’ own principal heralds. I’m particularly indebted to the West Kingdom History Project, which was an invaluable resource in finding precise dates for early recognition of territories. The emblazons on the page are my own composition, created from a variety of art sources, including but not limited to the Pictorial Dictionary of Heraldry, the Armorial Gold family of vector art, the Viking Answer Lady collection, and artwork from the respective territory’s websites. Each piece of armory has been reviewed against the original submission, and in some cases has been traced directly from the registered artwork. However, with the exception of the arms of Calontir, each device features the same style of laurel wreath, to give the armorial a unified feel.
